COTOPAXI NATIONAL PARK & QUILOTOA LOOP TOUR

2 Day tour departing from Quito

“Throughout this tour you can discover the very best of the Ecuadorian Andes and the dreamy Quilotoa Lagoon.”

Alexander von Humboldt, a famous explorer of the 19th century, dubbed the name for this area as the Avenue of the Volcanoes, which is perhaps the best description of one of the most impressive portions of the extensive Andes mountain range. In addition to the incredible sights, these mountains are home to rich cultures, history and traditions unlike any other in the world. Discover the perfectly coned-shape of Cotopaxi and the bewitching turquoise waters and impressive crater walls of the Quilotoa Lagoon, all while taking the time to learn more about the unique paramo landscapes and the charming local people who have called these lands home for centuries.

2 Days Cotopaxi & Quilotoa Loop

ITINERARY

Shortly after leaving Quito, you arrive at Cotopaxi National Park. The outstanding sight is the imposing active volcano with its perfectly shaped cone topped by glaciers, visible from all over the region, making it one of the most iconic symbols of Ecuador. When entering the park, you’ll enjoy the hiking trail that loops around the Limpiopungo Lagoon. Your guide will explain more about the different species of birds, plants, and mammals that dwell in the area such as hummingbirds, fox, deer and the Andean condor among others. You will complete your day getting to know more about the traditional haciendas, which emerged in the 16th century thanks to Spanish traditions. You’ll realize you can still feel the rich history and old traditions immersed in each corner as you touch each wall and walk in the fields with the same highland breeze felt by those who settled here centuries ago.

As you continue exploring the fascinating Andes, you visit yet another volcano, one that was once even greater and mightier than Cotopaxi. However, after a catastrophic eruption hundreds of years ago, only the caldera remains. Filling with water over time, it has become a spectacular Quilotoa Lagoon, surrounded by what was long ago the volcano’s slopes. The sight of the lagoon is outstanding, glimmering with the light of the sun and reflecting the movement of the clouds. You will have the chance to capture the distinct and changeable colors of the water changing constantly. There is a path that loops around the entire edge of the crate or you can walk down to the shore of the lagoon. The visit is not complete without stopping in the small villages nearby. As if time were frozen, these locals continue to thrive in houses built with ancient styles with ancient customs.

What our customers say

Dear Gabriela,
Good Morning.

My husband Pradip, Vajarias and I want to thank you for organizing our fantastic trip to Peru.

All the tour guides and the transfers were very smooth. Hotels were excellent. All the tour guides organized were very well informed and in Cusco our tour guide helped us to get to the airport safely when there was a transportation strike.

We had amazing experience in Amazon at Refugio Amazonas lodge too.

Thanks again.
